A casting call is a process whereby various people audition for parts in movies, plays, TV shows, and other roles in the entertainment sector. Casting calls can take any format that the casting director chooses. However, the vast majority of them either require you to prepare your monologue, skit, or musical performance. In other cases, you’re given a script, and you must recite some lines from it. Based on your performance you’re either picked for the role or rejected.
You can make money some money by attending casting calls and getting some acting/modeling jobs. It’s advisable to get an agent or sign up with a casting site. An agent might be more expensive so you may prefer to sign up for casting sites such as AllCasting, KidCasting, and Backstage. When casting calls open up, you will be notified and can attend them if you feel you’re suitable for the role.
You should have a commercial headshot before applying for a role. A commercial headshot is a picture of you which shows your facial features. In many cases, you won’t even be considered if you don’t have a commercial headshot. If you’re a serious actor, you can apply for significant roles. If you just want to make some extra cash, and you’re not a serious actor you can go for roles as an extra or bit-part player. Needless to say, bigger roles pay more. However, you can make some extra money by being cast as an extra in a film. Extras get paid some pretty decent cash per day of shooting. Depending on how big the movie is you can get anywhere from a few bucks to $180 per day, which is not bad at all considering that your role is minimal. You also get to make connections with others in the business and as such you can widen your network and increase your potential to get more paying gigs in the future.
Keep in mind that there are a lot of scams out there associated with casting calls. It’s not uncommon to hear of con artists organizing a casting call for a fake movie. They may charge you to attend an audition. But since the film is not legitimate they end up taking your money and you in no way benefit. As such it’s advisable only to use longstanding and reliable casting agencies to secure auditions. You may also want to join the film actors union so that you get protection from various scams and legal situations. There are indeed legitimate casting calls which require you to pay, but if you’re not sure, or you’re not comfortable it’s better to avoid them. You don’t want to end up losing money when what you want to do is the opposite.
